By 1879, several tanneries were operating in Benicia, chief of which was the Kullman-Saltz Tannery. Approximately, 1,000 hides were processed daily making Benicia the principal tanning center of the Pacific Coast.

Tanbark from Humboldt County is unloaded for the Tanneries.

One third of the leather manufactured in California was processed in Benicia.

This project was made possible by the Benicia Public Library, the Benicia Historical Museum, and the Benicia Historical Society through a NorthNet Library System Grant.
