Blackout Poetry
April 2, 2026 | 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

On April 2nd at 6PM teens are invited to the Benicia Public Library to take part in a creative Blackout Poetry event. Blackout poetry uses existing text as a starting point, with words and phrases crossed out to reveal an original poem hidden on the page.
During the program, teens will work with provided books or printed pages and art materials to create their own pieces. Participants can focus on the words, the visual layout, or both, shaping their poems in a way that feels personal and intuitive. No writing experience is required, and there’s no single way to approach the activity.
This event is designed to be relaxed and flexible, giving teens the freedom to create at their own pace. Sharing is optional, and there is no expectation to perform or explain finished work. All supplies will be provided, and completed pieces may be taken home.
This April event offers a hands-on way to mark National Poetry Month while trying a different, art-forward approach to poetry. Whether participants already enjoy creative writing or simply want a chance to do something different, this program provides an open, low-pressure environment to explore words and creativity alongside peers.
