COMMEMORATING 9/11: 25 YEARS SINCE THE WORST LOSS OF LIVES IN AMERICA

 On September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists associated with al-Qaeda, hijacked four California bound commercial airplanes.  In a coordinated attack that turned the planes into weapons, the terrorists intentionally flew two of the planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.  They also flew a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.  Passengers and crew members on the fourth plane launched a counterattack, forcing the hijacker pilot to crash the plane into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania near the town of Shanksville.

The 9/11 attacks killed 2,977 heroes.  This was the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil. The attacks caused the deaths of 441 first responders, the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history.  These events changed the lives of victims’ families and friends, survivors, first responders, rescue and recovery workers, volunteers, and millions of Americans and people around the world.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of this tragedy, the Benicia Public Library is proud to present 14 posters from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.  The exhibit will also include a book with the names and information of the heroes taken from us.

Please come to the Art Gallery of the Library to view this exhibit which will be up all day on September 10, 11 and 12. Also, visit the City Park on 9/11 and view the flags that are put up every year for the firefighters that lost their lives during this horrific event.  We must never forget.
