SALT BOX HOUSE (C1840)
145 WEST D STREET
This little New England style "salt box" house overlooking the Carquinez Strait is one of several such homes prefabricated on the East Coast and sent in sections to California to be reassembled here during the Gold Rush Days. This home was moved here from Port Costa circa 1879 after a disastrous fire destroyed all the buildings on First Street between D and E Streets in 1867.
This project was made possible by the Benicia Public Library, the Benicia Historical Museum, and the Benicia Historical Society through a NorthNet Library System Grant.
