Award Winning Children's Books

  • The ABBY (American Booksellers Book of the Year - Children’s Prize) is awarded every year to honor the “hidden treasures” that members of the ABA enjoyed recommending to their customers.
  • Every two years, an Anne Spencer Lingbergh Prize in Children’s Literature is awarded to the author who has written the best fantasy novel for children.
  • Every three years, the National Council of Teachers of English gives an Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children to a living American poet, to honor his or her body of work.
  • The Caldecott Medal is awarded by the American Library Association. It is given to the author of the most distinguished picture book of the previous year.
  • Each May, the winner of the California Young Reader Medal are announced. This award is decided by students throughout California.
  • The Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award is given to a Canadian author who has published the best piece of creative writing (fiction, poetry, etc.) during the past year.
  • Every July, the winner of the Carnegie Medal is announced. The Carnegie Medal is given by the Library Association (in the United Kingdom) to “an outstanding book for children and young people.”
  • The Coretta Scott King Award is given each year to honor an author or illustrator “whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the ‘American Dream’.”
  • Presented by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Golden Kite Award is the only award presented to authors and artists by their peers.
  • The Library Association in the U.K. presents the Kate Greenaway Medal for “outstanding illustration in a children’s book.”
  • The Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal is given every three years to an author who, over a period of years, has made an important contribution to children’s literature.
  • The Young Adult Library Services Association (part of ALA) gives the Michael Printz Award for a book that “exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.”
  • The Association for Library Service to Children gives the Mildred L. Batchelder Award to an American publisher who has published the most outstanding English translation of a book that was originally published in another language and in another country.
  • Every January, the Association for Library Service to Children awards the Newbery Medal to the author of the most distinguished children’s book from the previous year.
  • The Pura Belpre Award is given to the most outstanding Latino/Latina writer and  illustrator “whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.”
  • The Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction is presented for a superior work of children’s literature that is published by a U.S. publisher and takes place in the New World.
