Twixt: Soulscapes in Oil An Exhibition Paintings by Tom Strychacz

Benicia resident Tom Strychacz and his wife have raised their seven
children here in town, while teaching in Oakland, where he is professor
of American Literature at Mills College (now Mills College at
Northeastern University). He is also the author of four books of
literary criticism and many scholarly articles, but his passion is
painting in oils. “Some people might call the style of my paintings
naïve or primitive -
but I prefer one viewer's description of my work
as "the least cynical paintings I've ever seen." I am from England, and
many of my paintings are romantic representations of that country. Some
of my more recent paintings depict California—they are “twixt” England
and California, as the title of my exhibition puts it! But all of them
are bright and whimsical.
