Becoming a Tutor

All tutoring is done by adult volunteers from the community.

Potential tutors receive 13.5 hours of training before being matched with a learner. The training consists of an evening orientation and 2 Saturday sessions, and is offered quarterly.

Next Tutor Training:

Tutor Training Orientation:

Thursday, August 14th at 6 p.m. in the Dona Benicia Room.

  • The training includes a general orientation to the program and such topics as learning styles, goal setting, reading materials and methods for adults, spelling and writing issues, and ideas for getting started.
  • Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week, for an hour and a half to two hours each time, at a time and place convenient to both people.
  • Staff support and workshops are available to assist tutors in the use of materials and tutoring methods.

Qualities of a tutor:

  • The most important qualities in tutors are having a big heart and being patient, flexible, and supportive of their students as they work toward their goals.
