One-on-One Tutoring:
Free, private tutoring is available to anyone who lives in Benicia, is over 16, out of school, and wants to improve his or her basic reading skills. The tutoring focus is on the student's goals, which often are reading to a child, helping a child with schoolwork, reading the newspaper, using a computer, getting a job - or a better job, getting a driver’s license, becoming a citizen, or getting a GED or high school diploma.

-
All tutoring is done by volunteers from the community who receive tutor training before being matched with a learner.
- Learner and tutor pairs meet once or twice a week, for about two hours each time, at a time and place that is convenient for both of them.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes:

Free classes are offered to adults with limited English conversational skills. Three levels of instruction are available: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Subjects include grammar, conversation, reading, writing, survival skills and much more. Classes meet Monday and Thursday from 9:00 - 11:30 am at the library, during the school year. Summer classes are available as well.

Computer Lab:

The computer classes offered in our Computer Lab are structured to help learners build their English skills. Hands-on support and great computer software that promotes learning is provided. Tutor support is encouraged and welcomed.

Families for Literacy Program:

The Families for Literacy Program provides special services to Adult Literacy students who have preschool children in the home. The goal of the program is to break the cycle of illiteracy by encouraging adults to read to their children regularly, beginning at a young age. The program is funded through a California State Library grant, and includes storytimes, gift books, family outings, parenting materials and classes for the Adult Literacy students, as well as community outreach and education.
